Education in the trap of Covid-19
Do any of us have ever imagined that we all will pass our exams without even attending because of COVID-19? Did we ever think that our summer holidays will extend for 4 months and more but we all just sit inside our houses without even stepping out for vacations?
Yes, our entire life turned out to be miserable after the outbreak of the biggest pandemic of this decade Covid-19, and we still can’t find a solution to overcome the losses we faced. But the greatest loss is we are unable to continue our education normally. We are just required to adapt to the new normal and that is online education.
Online education is not as easy as speaking into the microphone at one end, and connecting a laptop and listening to it on the other. There are many challenges faced at both ends.
Tradition to digital
Covid-19 has forced all the universities across India and the world to suspend physical classrooms and shift to online classes. In India, while online classes have been smooth for most private universities, the public ones are still adapting. There are also some debates about the nature of online classes, the future of examination and evaluation, and whether they could be conducted online or not.
In India, 320 million students were affected by the closure of schools because of Covid-19. Lakhs of students went from learning in a physical space to a virtual realm. Within a few days, educators had transformed lesson plans into some content that fit for Zoom app.
Just in the past few months, this new normal called online classes has transformed living rooms, bedrooms, and all available corners of a home into the new classroom. A very big impact of COVID-19 is that the school closures have exposed the fragility of our education system. this also widened the inequality gap.
The transition to online has unequally impacted huge communities.
With lockdowns and curfews, many students in India and the World aren’t able to go to alternative locations to access better and faster Wi-Fi, and yet digital access is not a luxury anymore but is now essential to life.
This gap is widening because of the delay in reopens of schools and colleges. As the COVID cases are increasing in a rapid number, the new normal of online classes cannot be the solution for education. It is just another way of stressing students and could cause health issues for the young generation. Students might not get affected by COVID-19. But they do get a lot of health issues due to a lot of screen time.
We cannot expect education institutions to reopen. This is because the situations right now are quite complicated as COVID cases started to increase. So the only way to fill this gap is online education. Hence the education is in the trap of COVID-19.
